5 Fabric Designers to watch (and adore).

I’m fabric obsessed. I’m sure you are too. Part of on my intrigue and passion about quilting is my ongoing search for fabric designers and collections that are non-traditional, contemporary, and forward thinking.

Here are five fabric designers that have contributed substantially to my fabric obsession:

1. LIZ SCOTT: While visiting This Is Love Forever, I happened upon some images of Liz Scott Fabric. You can find Liz’s work at her Etsy store, Wonderfluff. She prints in a “print on demand” model, so it can take a couple of weeks to receive. And, the fabric is expensive. BUT if you’re working on a unique quilt project, or even just need some new eye-catchy accent pillows, I bet the outcome will be well-worth the investment.

2. RILEY BLAKE DESIGNS: Talk about some cute fabrics!  I really like the Sublime collection by Doohikey Designs (who’s website is currently under construction as of this post). And they care an adorable I Wanna Be a Cowboy line in flannel and quilting cotton. I found some great prices on precut yards and 1/2 yards at My Needle & Thread on Etsy.

3. SANDI HENDERSON: I’m generally not a huge fan of the sweet, delicate floral designs. I’m always drawn to contemporary or bold fabrics. But these fabrics feel both sweet and contemporary, lovely and bold. Her fabrics are well known and distributed by Michael Miller Fabrics so you can find them at your favorite online store.

4. BRANDON MABLY: Abstracts, bolds, florals, masculine designs. This guy is amazing. But then again, he does work at Kaffe Fassett Studio as Studio Manager so of course he got it goin’ on. I’m a big Kafffe Fassett fan, and knowing that brilliant designers like Brandon Mably are contributing to the collections make using those fabrics even more delightful. Glorious Color has a large selection of Kaffe Fassett and Brandon Mably’s designs.

This quilt design and instructions can be found in the Winter 2009/2010 International Quilt Festival magazine, Page 90, by Quilting Arts (on newstands now!). And you can purchase the fabric kit for this quilt at Glorious Color.

5. TANYA WHELAN: I love, love, love her newest collection called Dolce. Her designs are delicate, Asian-inpsired, country-esque, geometric, etc. Its what the modern grandmother of today *should be* using to make headbands for a granddaughter, and a new block for her quilting bee. Free Spirit manufactures her collections so you can find them at your favorite spot.

Of course there are dozens more designers that I adore. I’ll get to them, and feel free to send me your favorites!  I love new finds! But for now…

Gotta go sew! (just started a new quilt last night!)
